Project Overview
This project focuses on implementing agroforestry systems and structured farmers’ planning initiatives across Rutsiro District to improve rural livelihoods and restore degraded landscapes. CIAC Rwanda works hand-in-hand with smallholder farming communities to integrate tree planting within agricultural fields, creating a sustainable model that boosts both ecological and economic outcomes.
The project aligns with Rwanda’s national green growth strategy and supports farmers in transitioning from subsistence farming to more resilient, tree-integrated production systems that protect soil, water, and biodiversity.
Key Activities
- Establishing demonstration agroforestry plots in key sectors of Rutsiro District
- Training farmers on agroforestry principles, tree selection, and land management
- Supporting the development of community-based farmers’ cooperatives
- Conducting soil health assessments and providing erosion control interventions
- Facilitating access to improved seeds, seedlings, and agricultural inputs
- Monitoring and evaluating livelihood outcomes through seasonal assessments
Expected Outcomes
Through this initiative, over 2,500 farmers are expected to adopt sustainable agroforestry practices, leading to improved food security, increased household income, and significant landscape restoration across Rutsiro District. The project directly contributes to Rwanda’s target of restoring degraded land and achieving carbon neutrality.
