Project Overview
The “One Tree per Pupil” campaign is a transformative environmental education initiative implemented in partnership with DIBcoop and schools in Muhanga’s Rongi Sector and across Karongi District. Each school pupil receives a native tree seedling, learns how to plant and care for it, and takes responsibility for its growth — creating a generation of young environmental stewards.
Known locally as Dibcoopya Gakeri, this campaign blends environmental conservation with values education, teaching children that every individual action contributes to a greener Rwanda.
Key Activities
- Distributing native tree seedlings to every enrolled pupil in participating schools
- Conducting environmental education sessions in classrooms and school gardens
- Establishing school nurseries for ongoing seedling propagation
- Training teachers to integrate environmental stewardship into the curriculum
- Organizing community tree planting days with parents and local leaders
- Tracking and reporting on tree survival rates and pupil engagement
Expected Outcomes
With over 5,000 pupils participating across Muhanga and Karongi, the campaign has already resulted in thousands of trees planted in schoolyards, homes, and community spaces. Beyond the ecological impact, the initiative is building a lasting culture of environmental responsibility among Rwanda’s next generation.
