Project Overview
Project Overview
CIAC Rwanda is pioneering a community-based carbon sequestration scheme in Rulindo District, creating a model for climate finance that directly benefits local communities. The pilot project establishes robust carbon accounting frameworks and connects rural farmers to emerging carbon markets, enabling them to earn income from sustainable land management.
This initiative aims to demonstrate the viability of community-led carbon projects in Rwanda, providing a replicable framework that can be scaled across the country to finance environmental stewardship at the grassroots level.
Key Activities
- Establishing baseline carbon stock measurements across participating land parcels
- Training community members on carbon monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV)
- Developing community carbon management plans and governance structures
- Linking farmers to voluntary carbon markets and certification bodies
- Planting native tree species to enhance above-ground carbon sequestration
- Building local capacity for long-term carbon project management
Expected Outcomes
The carbon scheme is projected to sequester over 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over its 10-year lifespan, while generating meaningful carbon revenue for 1,800+ community members in Rulindo. The project will serve as a national model for community-based carbon finance in Rwanda.
